Antakshari Beats turns the much-loved Indian car-trip and wedding-night game into a word chain on a glowing stage. Each word must begin with the last letter of the word before it and fit the round's category, all before the countdown ring runs out while the dholak keeps the beat.
It is made for families, friends and classrooms: quick enough for one player on a bus, lively enough for two teams in a living room. Categories include animals, food, places in India, colours and things, festivals and fun, and names. If you prefer the traditional version, sing mode lets you sing real songs instead of typing words.
How to play
- Each new word starts with the last letter of the previous one, for example ELEPHANT, TIGER, RABBIT, TOMATO.
- Type a word from the round's category before the beat runs out. A word cannot be repeated in the same game.
- Each word scores 100, plus up to 50 for speed, 10 for every letter past five, and a 50 bonus on tricky letters such as J, Q, X and Z.
- If you run out of time or get stuck, the other side takes the turn and 50 points. Three misses and you are out.
- If a category has no words left for a letter, that letter becomes open and any word counts.
- In sing mode, a team sings any song starting with the letter; a judge taps SUNG or STUCK and picks the next letter from the end of the song.
Controls
On a phone or tablet
Type your word on the on-screen keyboard and submit it. In party mode the answering team's phones get the keyboard and the first valid word counts.
On a computer
Type with your keyboard and press Enter to submit. Everything else is a click on large on-screen buttons.
Game modes
Solo
An endless chain against the clock in today's category, with three lives.
Vs computer
Your team against a computer team on easy, medium or hard. On easy you can tap a suggestion when stuck.
2 teams
Two teams share one device and hand it over each turn, typing words or playing sing mode.
Party (QR)
The game runs on a big screen and players join two teams by scanning a QR code with their phones; in sing mode one phone acts as the judge.
Tips
- Long words score more, and they can leave the other side a hard last letter.
- Words ending in E, T or S are kind to the next team; X, Q and Z are not.
- Plurals count: CATS works for CAT in Animals, Food, Things, Festive and Anything.
- Answer fast for the speed bonus, but a wrong guess costs time too, so think for a moment first.
- The hard computer likes to leave you an awkward letter, so keep a few words ready for letters like Y and U.
About the game
Antakshari, literally the last letter, is usually played with songs: one side sings, and the next must start a song from the last sound of the previous one. This game keeps that spirit with a word version anyone can play and a sing mode for the full tradition.
On a phone you type on the on-screen keyboard, which works well for solo and team play passed hand to hand. On a desktop or a TV-connected laptop the party mode shines, with the big screen showing the letter and phones doing the typing.
