Crater Kings is a turn-based artillery duel between two tanks on hills you can blow apart. You pull back like a slingshot to set the angle and power, check the wind, choose a weapon and fire. Every shell digs a crater, and a tank whose ground is blasted away tumbles down and takes damage.
It is a calm, thoughtful game with big explosions: you take your time over each shot, then watch the arc and adjust. It suits players of any age who enjoy aiming games, and it works just as well as a two-player game passed back and forth on one device.
How to play
- Drag back on the battlefield like a slingshot; the pull sets angle and power, and a dotted arc shows how your shot begins.
- Fine-tune the angle and power with the minus and plus buttons, then press FIRE.
- Watch the wind arrow at the top: wind pushes every shell sideways and changes a little each turn.
- Pick a weapon: the heavy bomb digs big craters, the triple shot fires a fan, the bouncer hops over hills and the mud bag builds a wall.
- Before shooting you can drive a little to find a better spot, but fuel is limited.
- Supply crates parachute in; drive over them or blast them to collect repairs and ammo. Destroy the other tank to win.
Controls
On a phone or tablet
Drag back on the screen to aim, use the minus and plus buttons to adjust, the arrow buttons to drive and FIRE to shoot.
On a computer
Drag back with the mouse to aim, adjust with the arrow keys or the on-screen buttons, then click FIRE.
Game modes
Campaign
Fifteen stages against named computer commanders, including three bosses. Win with health left and in few turns for three stars.
Vs computer
A single duel against the computer on easy, medium or hard; harder gunners aim better and use more weapons and moves.
2 players
Two people take turns on one device.
Daily
A daily battlefield with the same map and wind for everyone.
Tips
- Look at where your last shell landed and change the angle or power only a little.
- Wind matters more on high lobs than on flat shots, so fire low when it is strong.
- Blast the ground under an enemy tank to make it fall and take damage.
- Use the mud bag to bury a rival's gun or to build a wall in front of yourself.
- Save the heavy bomb to finish off a tank that is almost destroyed.
- Higher ground gives you better angles, so it can be worth spending fuel to climb.
About the game
Crater Kings follows the long tradition of turn-based artillery games, where two cannons on a hilly landscape trade shots and the ground itself changes as the battle goes on. It adds parachuting supply crates, four weapon types, a campaign with bosses and tank paints that you buy with coins in the garage.
On a phone the slingshot drag is quick and natural with a thumb, and the buttons help with small corrections. On a desktop the mouse and arrow keys give very fine control over every shot.
