Ember & Ripple

Play Ember & Ripple now · free, no download, no sign-up
Ember & Ripple is a puzzle platformer for two heroes who need each other. Ember, the fire spirit, can wade through lava but is put out by water. Ripple, the water spirit, swims through water but boils away in lava. Green goo destroys both. Each level is a temple chamber, and only when both spirits stand in their own doors is it complete.
It shines as a cooperative game for two people sharing one keyboard, such as a parent and child or two friends, but it also works alone: you control one spirit at a time and swap between them. The fun is in teamwork puzzles where one spirit holds a button so the other can pass.
How to play
- Move both spirits through the chamber to their own coloured doors.
- Ember collects red gems and is safe in lava; Ripple collects blue gems and is safe in water.
- Jump over green goo: it destroys either spirit.
- Stand on buttons and walk through levers to move stone gates and lifts.
- Walk into stone blocks to push them; blocks can hold buttons down and act as steps.
- Earn stars for finishing, for collecting every gem and for beating the par time.
Controls
On a phone or tablet
Use the on-screen left, right and jump buttons for one spirit, and press Swap to switch to the other while the first waits.
On a computer
Ember moves with the left and right arrows and jumps with up; Ripple moves with A and D and jumps with W, so two people can share one keyboard.
Game modes
Two players
Two people share one keyboard, each guiding one spirit at the same time.
Solo
Play both spirits yourself: on a phone swap between them, on a keyboard steer both with the two key sets.
Chambers
Twenty temple levels that unlock one after another, adding lifts, levers, moving floors and wind vents as you go.
Tips
- Only one spirit needs to hold a button, so take turns.
- Blocks press buttons too, and make handy steps.
- A lever stays where you push it; each one flips its stones.
- Ride a vent's wind and steer toward the ledge while you float.
- If you are stuck, the Hint button explains how the chamber works.
About the game
The game builds on the fire-and-water co-op puzzle platformers that have been played in browsers for years: two characters with opposite weaknesses, one shared temple. Each of the 20 chambers here is hand-made and checked to be solvable with every gem.
On a computer it is at its best as a couch co-op game for two on one keyboard. On a phone, large on-screen buttons and the Swap button make it a calm solo puzzle game.
