Brick Game 9999-in-1 recreates the cheap plastic handheld that so many kids carried around in the 1990s. A chunky console sits on your screen with a green LCD that leaves faint ghosts, seven-segment numbers for the score, clicky buttons and square-wave beeps, all made in the browser.
Inside are eight games drawn on a 10 by 20 grid of pixels: Block Stack, Road Racer, Tank Battle, Brick Breaker, Snake, Block Blaster, Hop Across and Pin Bounce. It is for anyone who remembers those handhelds, and for anyone who enjoys small, pure arcade games with nothing in the way.
How to play
- Pick a game on the handheld itself: left and right change the game from A-01 to A-08.
- Up and down set the speed, B sets the starting level, and A starts the game.
- Every game uses the D-pad and the big A button, with B as a second button where needed.
- Each game keeps its own hi-score and three stars to earn.
- In vs computer and two-player mode you play Block Stack, Road Racer or Snake on two handhelds; the last handheld still running wins.
- In Block Stack battles, clearing two or more rows at once sends junk rows to your opponent.
Controls
On a phone or tablet
Tap the on-screen D-pad and the A and B buttons on the console. In two-player mode there is one handheld at each end of the phone.
On a computer
Use the arrow keys or WASD for the D-pad, Space for A and X for B. Two players sit side by side: player one uses WASD with F and G, player two the arrows with / and the full stop.
Game modes
Solo
Play any of the eight games and chase hi-scores and stars.
Vs computer
Two handhelds head to head against the computer on easy, medium or hard.
2 players
Two handhelds on one screen: top and bottom on a phone, side by side on a desktop.
Daily
A daily cartridge: the same game and speed for everyone that day.
Tips
- Block Stack: keep the middle of the stack low and leave one gap for the long bar.
- Road Racer: hold up for turbo when the road ahead is clear; turbo scores double.
- Snake: hug the walls early on, because the middle fills up fast.
- Start at a low speed to learn a game, then raise the speed dial once you are comfortable.
- In Block Stack battles, save up for multi-row clears so you send more junk to your rival.
About the game
The game is a love letter to the one-screen LCD handhelds that promised thousands of games and really held a handful. All eight games here are original takes on familiar ideas: stacking falling blocks, dodging cars, steering a snake, breaking bricks and more. Coins unlock new console shells and LCD screen tints.
On a phone the console fills the screen in portrait and the buttons are big enough for thumbs. On a desktop you can play with the keyboard, and two friends can share it with two handhelds side by side.
