Galaxy Defenders is a neon fixed-screen shooter in the style of the arcade invader games. Rows of pixel invaders march side to side, step down when they reach the edge and speed up as their numbers thin out. Your cannon slides along the bottom and fires upward to stop them before they land.
It is built for both quick sessions and long high-score runs, with bunkers that crumble pixel by pixel, a saucer carrying power-ups and a mothership every fifth wave. A retro screen glow finishes the look.
How to play
- Move your cannon left and right and shoot the invaders.
- Invaders are worth 10, 20 or 30 points; gold armoured invaders take two hits.
- Hide behind bunkers, but they erode with every hit.
- Hit the saucer for bonus points and a power-up: rapid fire, spread shot or a shield that blocks one hit.
- A mothership attacks every fifth wave.
- If any invader reaches the ground, the game is over.
Controls
On a phone or tablet
Drag anywhere to move the cannon. Firing is automatic, or choose tap to fire on the title screen.
On a computer
Move with A and D or the arrow keys, or drag with the mouse.
Game modes
Solo
Lives, waves and a high score.
Vs computer
Split-screen race against a bot on easy, medium or hard. Clearing a wave sends extra invaders to your rival.
2 players
Split-screen versus with the same wave-sending rule, or co-op on one shared field.
Tips
- Clear one column at a time from the edge; the formation then has further to march before stepping down.
- The last few invaders move very fast, so line up shots ahead of them.
- Shoot the saucer when it appears, as power-ups make the later waves much easier.
- Keep at least one bunker standing for the mothership waves.
- Gold armoured invaders need two hits, so do not leave them for last.
About the game
The marching invader shooter is one of the most recognisable arcade designs ever made: a row of aliens, a lone cannon and bunkers in between. Galaxy Defenders keeps that tension and adds power-ups, armoured invaders, mothership waves and split-screen play.
On a phone, dragging anywhere moves the cannon and auto-fire keeps your thumb free. On a desktop the keyboard gives precise movement. Two players can race head to head or defend together in co-op.
